The rotatable tips of the log scriber ensure constant settings, even when you change the orientation. The log scriber is delivered pre-set and only needs to be recalibrated in case of a tip exchange.

The correct setting of the Scriber:

Adjusting the scriber pens to the symmetry axis of each side arm of the compass:

The best way is to find a vertical wall (check with a water level!) and to draw a vertical line on it (also with a water
level!). Punch marc that vertical line at an optional spot, so that you can place the lower scriber pen there (and so
prevent the scriber from moving!).

Watch out!
Make sure your punch mark is shallow! Otherwise your scriber will not be exactly at a right angle to the wall any
more, which will have an effect on the back water level in the scriber.

Now you have to position the upper pen:
It has to produce a congruent line in every rotating position. So you have to adjust the upper pen until you find the
correct position: GAUGE A (Extend A). If the pen is out too far (GAUGE A too big!) the line will be too low. Is the pen
too far in (GAUGE A too small!), the line will be too high. In each case the pen would not draw a congruent line again,
if you would set it to a different angle!

So only if the pen is adjusted to the symmetry axis of its compass arm (GAUGE A correct!) will it draw two or more
congruent lines!

After adjusting the first pen correctly, turn the scriber about face (180°) and adjust the second pen the same way.
Only if the pen point draws a congruent line at any angle, GAUGE A is correctly adjusted. This is also the default
setting upon delivery.

Fine correction
If the axial level is not 100% correct after inserting the scriber pens on a vertical wall, you can unscrew one scriber
pen slightly (max. ½ turn of the adjusting screw) and screw the other scriber pen slightly in for fine correction.

Avoiding backlash:
To achieve flawless results it is necessary to avoid backlash! In order to find the right position of the compass arms,
you need to either open them to the right position or to close them to the right position. Don’t move them back and
forth by a millimeter or two. Doing that will cause a backlash and falsify your results!

Upkeep and care:
To minimize abrasion at the compass as much as possible, it should be kept clean and it should be oiled at the marked
spots.
